To reproduce, download a Debian netinstall ISO [1], dd it to a USB stick, and boot from it.  Then choose the plain Install (/not/ the Graphical Install) and choose "Go Back" as soon as you can.  Then pick the last-but-two item ("Execute a shell") in that menu.

Then run 'nano --nohelp /etc/mke*'.  Type ^S.  Oops: the cursor disappeared.  Now hold down <Up> until the cursor reappears.  Note that the status bar is cleared at the same time.  Hmmm...

Now type ^W nosuch <Enter>.  See that "nosuch" was not found, and that the cursor disappeared again.  Sigh.  Hold <Up> until it comes back.

Now type M-U.  It says "Unbound key: M-U".  Type some key just once.  See that the status bar is blanked and that the cursor has returned.  (The "unbound key" routine is special: it always sets the blanking delay for the status bar to a single keystroke.)

So... a mitigating workaround for this disappearing cursor could be to always set 'statusblank = 1' when using Slang.
